I work at De Montfort University in Leicester, UK, where I am Professor of Education and Technology. I am also a Visiting Professor at the University of South Wales.

At DMU, I act as Director of the Institute for Research in Criminology, Community, Education and Social Justice. I am also a member of the Centre for Urban Research on Austerity, and was previously a Research Associate in the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility. I am Faculty Head of Research Ethics for Health and Life Sciences. I direct the research and evaluation of the award-winning, Decolonising DMU project.

I supervise PhD students, and teach on undergraduate modules on evidence-based teaching and learning, research methods, and historical and contemporary issues in education.

I am also an Advance HE National Teaching Fellow. As a member of the Decolonising DMU team, in 2023 I won an Advance HE Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence (CATE), alongside a Green Gown award for work on decolonising and decarbonising.

My research interests include:

• the idea of the University and radical alternatives to it/transcending the University;
• the place of co-operative practice and mass intellectuality in addressing and moving with-and-through crises;
• decolonising the University;
• the University and the Triple Crunch (of socio-environmental crisis, energy availability, and the secular crisis of capitalism);
• alientation, hopelessness and academic ill-being; and
• technology and critical social theory.
